ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF SOUTH AFRICA
13 & 14 September 2001
The Biennial Conference of the Economic Society of South Africa
took place at Glenburn Lodge, Muldersdrift, near Johannesburg.
The Society celebrated its 75th anniversary.
The aim of the Conference was to stimulate debate on the possible
solutions and economic policy options available to South Africa and
other SADC countries.
The Conference theme was "The Economic Empowerment of South
Africa".
Keynote Speakers:
- Mr Tito Mboweni, Governor of the South African Reserve
Bank, addressed the Gala Dinner on 13 September 2001.
- Dr Jeffrey Lewis from the World Bank spoke on
the topic: "Promoting Growth and Employment in South Africa
and implications for SADC".
- Prof Estian Calitz, current President of the Economic
Society of South Africa spoke on the topic: Is South Africa on
the Right Track with Structural Economic Reform?
A panel discussion on aspects of "The role of SADC in a
Globalised World Economy" took place.
Through a series of plenary discussions, the Conference tackled
the following issues:
- Monetary policy relating to exchange rate flexibility,
interest rates and inflationary policy
- International trade policy and strategy, regional integration,
foreign direct investment and EU-SA trade agreements
- The role of the New Economy
- Labour market participation, productivity, standards and
discrimination
- Industry specific studies in the manufacturing, motor and
semi-conductor industries
- Fiscal policy relating to budget deficits and social security
- Economic development issues such as poverty, urban empowerment
and rural development
- Financial markets
- Competition policy and strategy
- Small business development
