FOUNDERS’ MEDAL FOR MASTER’S DEGREE SHORT DISSERTATION (the degree includes both coursework and a dissertation)

A silver-plated medal is awarded annually to the winning candidate whose dissertation is submitted for a master’s degree at a South Africa university in partial fulfilment of the degree (the degree includes both coursework and a dissertation).

The dissertation must be submitted by the university’s department (or school) of economics or branch of economics, e.g. department of economic history, department of agricultural economics. Each department may make one submission annually. A submission fee is payable, determined annually by Council. The candidate’s promoter should submit a formal recommendation why the dissertation should be considered for the award.

The dissertation becomes eligible for submission from the date of graduation, and remains eligible for the following 12 months. The closing date for submissions is 28 February of each year, unless otherwise indicated by the Secretary. For example, a department wishing to submit the dissertation of a student who graduates on 30 April would submit the dissertation by 28 February of the following year.

The medal cannot be awarded to the same person twice.

The dissertation must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Office Word or PDF. In addition two hard copies of the dissertation are required. The copies will remain the property of the Society.

If no dissertation of sufficient merit is submitted, no award shall be made for that year.

If two or more dissertations of sufficient merit and equally deserving of an award are submitted in any one year, the Council may, at its discretion, make arrangements appropriate to the circumstances.

Winners of awards are strongly encouraged to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals.
