Editorial Policy

EVALUATION: All manuscripts are refereed by at least two referees coordinated through the Editor. A blind review process ensures complete anonymity between authors and referees.

COPYRIGHT: Copyright Law requires that permission must be obtained to quote from or reproduce substantial portions of previously published material. Such permission must be obtained before submission. Previously published figures or diagrams should included acknowledgement of the source and copyright in the caption.  

SUBMISSIONS:

These must:

·        be readable by various versions of MS Word,

·        typed on one side of the paper only,

·        employ 11-point Times New Roman on A5 size paper,

·        have an justified right side,

·        be paginated,

·        use UK English

Style notes

SUBMISSION LETTER: This letter must include a statement that the manuscript is the authors’ own work and has not been submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.

FONT: Unless otherwise specified below, the font should be Times New Roman using a 11-point size.

TITLE PAGE: This first page should include:

  • the title of the manuscript,
  • the names and affiliations of all contributions,
  • their full address, telephone and fax number and email address,
  • the primary contact author in the case of multiple authors,
  • total word numbers, including references,
  • date of first submission,
  • a short biography stating affiliation, physical address and email for each author. 

ABSTRACT PAGE should contain,

  • The title, excluding the author’s name to facilitate the blind review process,
  • The abstract , between 50-200 words in 10-point font, which provides a concise statement of intentions, results and conclusions. References must not appear in the abstract. The word abstract must be in caps, bold, followed by a stop.

STRUCTURE

The paper to be ordered in the following manner: (a) submission letter, (b) title page, (c) abstract page, (d) paper structure consisting of introduction, the study with appropriate headings, conclusion, acknowledgment, reference list

TEXT FORMAT

Headings Examples 

Main heading: Initial caps of main words, no numbering, centre-aligned, single space above and below. 
E.g. INTRODUCTION  

Sub-heading: No numbering, bold, left-aligned, space above
E.g. Practical considerations

Tables.

·        Number in Arabic numerals

·        Caption located above the table, left-justified, initial cap, non-bold,

e.g. Table 2. Cotton prices in 1999.

·        Source reference below the Table

·        Must not be larger than a single page of the journal.

Figures

  • All illustrations, graphs and maps to be called Figures.
  • Number in Arabic numerals with caption located beneath the illustration, left- justified with source reference, e.g. Figure 2. Determining the forward exchange rate.
  • Must not be larger than a single page, preferably ˝ page or less, and contain lettering that is legible after reduction in size.

Quotations.

  • Use single quotation marks for quoted material within the text; double quotation marks for a quote within a quote. Three leader dots should be used if there is a mid-sentence break or if the break is followed by a new sentence.
  • More than 40 words must be indented from the left margins, be justified, line spacing above and below with 10-point font and no quotation marks.

Equations must be centered, space above and below and numbered in Arabic numerals.

Footnotes and endnotes: These are not permitted for this style.

Acknowledgment (no plural): Should be placed before references in main heading format using third person.
 e.g. Acknowledgement

REFERENCES. In-text references are cited with parenthesis using the author/date style: Examples: (Smith, 2004) or (Smith, 2004a; 2004b) or (Smith and Jones, 2005) or (Smith, et al. 2006) when more than two authors are cited in a single paper or Smith (2003) noted that…. Page numbers must be given when direct quotations are provided (Smith, 2004: 36).

The reference list, placed at the end of the text, must be typed in alphabetical order of authors.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON STYLE

SPACING. A single space is used after a full stop, comma, colons, semicolons and before a left parenthesis. No space is placed before a question mark.

CAPITALIZATION. Keep to a minimum using lower case for words such as government, church, city, state, north, south.

ITALICS. Use for the titles of books, journals, newspapers, plays, films, ships, et al. Otherwise keep to a minimum.

NUMERALS.

  • Spell out words under 10.
  • Use numerals for measurements (25 km or 3 years old)
  • Numbers that begin a sentence must be spelt out.
  • Percentage sign to be used only in tables and figures and within parentheses.
  • Spell ‘percent’ as one word using a numeral for the number.  

DATES.

  • The plural of a year has no apostrophe, e.g. 1960s not 1960’s
  • Dates to be set out as follow: 15 July 1939 (no commas)
  • Use twentieth century not 20th century.

SPELLING

  • Use –ize in preference to -ise for most verbs (organize, realize, specialize, recognize, globalize) except for advertise and enfranchise.
  • No hyphens separate cooperate, coordinate, counterbalance, ecotourism, ecotourist, northeast, southwest, overproductive, overdependence, proactive, overpopulation, oversimplified, overuse, worldwide.
  • Use hyphen for counter-productive, re-evaluate, re-enact, sub-field, sub-disciplines, socio-cultural, socio-economic, socio-political, post-modern, post-war, well-being and all ‘eco’ prefixes
  • Use acknowledgment instead of acknowledgement.

Manuscripts should be submitted in final form by email and only in MS Word to the Editorial Secretary  saje@up.ac.za

All papers should be professionally edited. A professional fee of R8 per 100 words will be charged if editing is left to the Managing Editor.

Tables, equations and diagrams should be kept to a minimum  

Diagrams and Figures should be clear and professionally drawn in Excel and drawn into the manuscript. Caption 10 pt Legend 7 pt

References in Harvard; font size 8 pt

Font We experiences difficulties in the printing process of the JDP if the layout is not done in one font throughout the manuscript. We make use of Times. Please ensure that you use only this font in Equations; Graphs/Legends, Figures; Headings of diagrams

Scanned text, Tables, Figures, Diagrams greatly reduces the quality and the font cannot be changed, causing problems, so please avoid this method.

Also avoid the use of colour images in diagrams and in figures as they also cause a loss of quality, use only black and white instead.

Never used pattern fills in the bar chart as they are proprietary to the software that created them.
