AN OVERVIEW OF THE SOCIETY
Objectives
In terms of its Constitution, the objectives of the Economic
Society are to promote the discussion of and research into economic
matters, in particular those affecting South Africa. To this end, it
will enlist the active co-operation of all person, of whatever
school of economic thought, capable of throwing light on them.
Membership
The Economic Society was established in 1925. Over the years the
members of the Society have played a major role in applying economic
thinking to and analysing South African economic issues. Members
have played leading roles in Government economic policy making, in
the business world and in academia. Cabinet Ministers, Governors of
the Reserve Bank, Chief Executives of Companies, Directors-General
of Government Departments, internationally acclaimed (academic)
economists and academic leaders count or have counted as
distinguished members of the Society.
The Society has approximately 600 members, which includes six honorary
members, 14 life members, five pension members and 18 student
members. Foreign members - of different categories - totalled 22.
